On August 12, 2026, the Moon’s shadow will cross northern Spain shortly before sunset. People inside the path of totality will see the Sun disappear completely for a brief period, while most of the rest of Europe will experience a partial solar eclipse. [1]
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun. During totality, the bright surface of the Sun is hidden and its faint outer atmosphere, called the corona, becomes visible. In most locations along the 2026 path, totality will last less than two minutes.
Spain is receiving special attention because many populated areas are inside or near the path. The shadow will move across parts of Galicia, Asturias, Castilla y León, Aragón, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. Clouds may still hide the eclipse, even after months of planning. This uncertainty is part of the experience. Spain can prepare roads, safety information and public events, but it cannot control the weather.
The eclipse demonstrates how a natural event can suddenly affect transportation, tourism, business and public safety. The darkness may last less than two minutes, but preparing millions of people to watch it responsibly requires much more time.
